Artists from Los Llaneros holding instruments

Los Llaneros

Los Llaneros (Showcase D1): A quartet that brings to life the vibrant and at times haunting melodies of the Colombian/Venezuelan "Llanos," or plains. Their repertoire extends to music from various regions of Colombia and Venezuela, showcasing the rich cultural diversity of these two sister nations, along with original compositions. Here's more about the amazing members of our ensemble: Ed East (Panamanian) is our musical director and a genuinely funny guy. He's a talented multi-instrumentalist playing maracas, Latin percussion, bass, flute, quena, and gaita. Daniel Rojas (Colombian) is a brilliant harpist with a passion for the music of Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. He's also the second funniest guy in the ensemble. Daniel plays the harp, cuatro, maracas, tiple, guitar, and percussion. Karin Stein (Colombian) is the director and lead composer of the group. Her remarkable voice and award-winning compositions have been featured in movies. She may not be funny, but she has a contagious laugh! Karin plays cuatro, guitar, tiple, quena, and gaita. Diego Mosquera (Colombian) is our maracas maestro, having won numerous maraca competitions in Colombia and Venezuela. Like Karin, he's not known for his jokes, but he can't resist laughing when Ed and Daniel pull out all the stops. Diego plays maracas and other percussion instruments, along with the cuatro.

Gaspard&Dancers

Gaspard&Dancers (Showcase D2): Since the first moment they exploded onto the stage in 2009, Gaspard&Dancers (G&D) has consistently wowed audiences throughout NC, nationally, and internationally with sold-out performances. G&D is led by Founder/Artistic Director Gaspard Louis, a former dancer with the world-renowned Pilobolus Dance Theater. Louis collaborates closely with his dancers to create works that marry playful physicality with lyrical, athletic partnering. The result: works of haunting beauty and emotional force. Critics have described the dancers’ quality of movement as “exuberant,” “organic,” “buoyant,” and “floating with natural ease.” Photo By: Robin Gallant.

Artists from Arcis Saxophone Quartet holding saxophones

Arcis Saxophone Quartet

Arcis Saxophone Quartet (Virtual Showcase 1D): The Arcis Saxophone Quartet redefines classical music through innovative, boundary-pushing performances and engaging concerts. In their 15th anniversary season, the winner of the Showcase Award Grand at Arts Northwest, Oregon, and globally touring ensemble presents a selection from their latest program, Quirky Nightclub Chronicles. This program features fresh sounds with Marc Mellit's Tapas, captivating stories in their arrangement of Moments with Piazzolla, and hot rhythms leading to a surprise finale in their signature piece Patchwork by Philippe Geiss. As always, expect the unique Arcis twist: creative arrangements, powerful interpretations, and a touch of eccentricity that allows classical music to be not only heard but felt throughout the entire body. 15 years of Arcis: For the Arcis Saxophone Quartet, music is an endless playground, and they are as diverse as no other group. They founded the arcis_collective, which fuses chamber music and dance into a joint performing act, created their own label, arcis records, and their in-house production company, arcis visuals. Only one thing remains constant: their distinctive sound. Photo By: arcisvisuals.

Paige King Johnson holding a guitar

Paige King Johnson

Paige King Johnson (Showcase D3): Paige King Johnson has been working with and opening for Pam Tillis on dates, including the Grand Ole Opry. Her new live show is a nod to the legends on whose shoulders she stands. In this stage show entitled, Honky Tonk Sweethearts, she performs the songs of legends like Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood, and, of course, Pam Tillis. With her distinctively traditional country style, Johnson covers the hits with the passion of the original while reserving some singer/songwriter moments for herself. This four-time Carolina Country Music Award winner and North Carolina native has been named the first Musical Ambassador for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and works alongside the organization to promote agriculture through her music and travels.

Oran Etkin

Oran Etkin (Virtual Showcase 2D): “We are together, we are soldiers of peace"—these words of Etkin’s musical collaborator from Zimbabwe, Tute Chigamba, start off the Open Arms live show and encapsulate the project’s mission. The Open Arms album, released 2024 on Snarky Puppy’s label GroundUP, was recorded in Brazil, Turkey, Zimbabwe, the Czech Republic, the US, and Canada as Etkin took time off on his tours to collaborate with musicians in each country. The live show incorporates electronics built from stems from these recordings: imagine loops of handclapping from Zimbabwe, indigenous flutes from Brazil, and a Roma (gypsy) singer from the Czech Republic triggered in and out spontaneously by the band as they improvise around it. The result is what NPR describes as “exhilarating global tapestries of sound.” Described as “ebullient” by the NY Times, “a visionary who, because of his unifying powers, should be heard everywhere these days” by Jazz Podium. The French newspaper Libération chose Etkin's Paris concert as a top highlight of the year: “a concert of weightlessness, class, spark, inspiration, and sharing. Magic uninterrupted. The crowd... went wild. For such is the music of Etkin: sensitive to the exchange with the audience. Can be paired/co-booked with Etkin's Timbalooloo Young Audiences concert with the same musicians!

Dancers from Flamenco Vivo dancing

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana (Showcase D4): Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana showcases the pride and power of flamenco in Tablao Flamenco, featuring an international cast of four dancers and musicians. Named after the wooden floor used by a bailaor/a (dancer), tablaos are intimate venues that harness the highly improvisational and virtuosic nature of flamenco. Originally known as cafés cantantes (which became popular during the mid-nineteenth century in Spain), tablaos are still among the most popular places to see flamenco today. Tablao performances offer audiences a rare opportunity to feel the artists’ emotions up close and experience the dynamic interplay between the dancers, guitarist, and singer come alive. The energy is explosive as artists are inspired by one another and have the freedom to take risks and embrace spontaneity.
