Kaira Ba

Kaira Ba (Showcase TYA1): Kaira Ba ecstatically explores the spiritual songs, stories, and rhythms of Senegal’s millennia-old Mandé culture. Diali Cissokho chose the name “Kaira Ba” (meaning “The Great Peace”) because it elegantly reflects a core value that he and his band aim to express when they perform. Cissokho comes from a long line of prominent hereditary griots—people who are entrusted to maintain a West African village’s genealogies and important ceremonial affairs through song. But he is much more than a preservationist. Cissokho and percussionist/korist Will Ridenour effortlessly integrate the traditional sounds of the kora, the 22-stringed bridge-harp.

Liars and Belivers

Liars and Believers (Showcase TYA2): A bumbling (yet lovable) maintenance crew finds a magical bird, and a mad chase begins! Racing over land, across the sea, and through the air—battling pirates and monsters—How far will our heroes go... without ever leaving the maintenance room? Yellow Bird Chase reveals the power of imagination and shows us how to play nice together. Join an adventure of masks, puppets, and gibberish. Appropriate for the whole family. Fully accessible to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences, as well as to non-English speakers.

Hobey Ford's Golden Rod Puppets

Hobey Ford's Golden Rod Puppets (Showcase TYA3): Hobey’s Ford’s production ANIMALIA explores the world of animals through movement, music, and visually stunning puppetry. Breaking out of the traditional puppet theater booth, Hobey turns the whole theater into his performance stage. ANIMALIA includes a magnified look at butterfly and frog metamorphosis, the world of birds, and a classic undersea ballet of whales, frolicking dolphins, and otters. The audience will witness the magic of beautiful, animated, carved foam puppets—each one a work of art. Hobey has carefully studied each animal’s characteristic movements and has designed control mechanisms to allow his puppets to move in a lifelike manner as he tells the stories of animal transformation without words and set to the music of Paul Winter’s “Icarus.” This captivating non-verbal family performance is as aurally dramatic as it is visually stunning. Hobey tours this performance internationally. He is a two-time winner of puppetry’s highest honor, the UNIMA Citation of Excellence.

Captain Nemo's Adventure Academy:

20,000 Laughs Under the Sea!

Captain Nemo's Adventure Academy: 20,000 Laughs Under the Sea! (Showcase TYA4): Take a deep dive into environmental stewardship, earth sciences, and social courage with Captain Nemo, the reclusive, world-renown maritime hero! The cantankerous Captain inspires kids to become guardians of our watery-blue planet by highlighting the vital interdependence of all living things. Utilizing immersive clown-theater, cartoon-like sound effects, original music, and slapstick comedy, Captain Nemo excites and challenges children grades 2–5, quenching their thirst for knowledge of the Wonders of the Deep. During this laugh-riot production, the interconnectedness of life above and below the waves is showcased via encounters with a giant squid, the elusive Angler fish, magical bioluminescent plankton, whale poop, and a tsunami of plastic. Currently touring nationwide, "Captain Nemo's Adventure Academy: 20,000 Laughs Under the Sea!" was commissioned by The Berkshire Museum, Pittsfield, MA, and devised, produced, and performed by David Engel, the creator of "Pirate School: Sea Dreams!" "Pirate School: The Science of Pirates!" "Wizard Academy!" and "Jack Frost: Snow Kidding!"
